Sweeny Family Photos for the Next Generation of Bulldogs

Sweeny is the westernmost incorporated town in Brazoria County, a Bulldog town of about 3,600 people with the San Bernard River just east of the city limits. I’m Jen Duke, and I take bump photos, hospital photos, newborn photos and family photos for Sweeny parents who want the baby years printed and kept, with mom in the frame and not just behind the phone.

Newborn sessions are in my natural-light home studio in Richwood. Fresh 48 can be at the hospital or at home, and family sessions can be at your house or outdoors. Every session comes with an online gallery for downloads and prints.

Local to Sweeny

Bulldog pride, river woods and Sweeny weather

Sweeny was named for John Sweeny, a Tennessee colonist who arrived in 1833, and it was incorporated in 1945. Sweeny ISD runs Sweeny Elementary, Sweeny Junior High and Sweeny High School, and it serves nearby Old Ocean, Churchill and River’s End too (Wikipedia). A few Sweeny things worth knowing when you plan photos:

Raising the next Bulldogs

Sweeny High won a state football title in 1966 and state basketball titles in 1985, 1986 and 1987 (Wikipedia). School pride runs deep here. Take a photo of your little one in a Bulldogs shirt every year on the same day, and you’ll have a set you can print side by side when they graduate.

Live oaks and river woods

Sweeny sits in dense forest on the coastal plain, and early settlers here shipped live-oak timber for shipbuilding (Handbook of Texas). Tree cover is your friend for outdoor photos. Open shade at the edge of the trees, late in the day, gives soft light without squinting.

Plan around rain (and the odd snow)

Tropical Storm Fay dropped over 20 inches of rain on Sweeny in 2002, and Christmas Eve 2004 brought close to 10 inches of snow in places (Wikipedia). Weather here can change fast. That’s one reason newborn photos happen indoors in the Richwood studio, and why it’s worth asking me what happens if the weather turns on an outdoor day.

Before you book

Phone photo tips Sweeny parents can try this week

  1. Under the trees, put your back to the sun and keep the kids in the shade. Their faces stay even and nobody squints.
  2. On a rainy day, move photo time to your brightest window. Rainy-day light through glass is soft and flattering.
  3. Before a Friday night game, take a quick photo of the kids in their Bulldog gear on the porch while it’s still light out.
  4. Get in the picture yourself. Ask your partner or a grandparent for one photo of you and the baby each day.
  5. Shoot the small stuff: tiny toes, the hospital bracelet, the first onesie. Those details go fast.

Sweeny’s community center and library opened in the 1980s (Handbook of Texas), and the city park dates to 1967, so there are a couple of easy spots for a walk with the kids.
