Old Texas history and a new baby
Jones Creek incorporated in 1970 and had 1,975 people in 2020. State Highway 36 runs through town toward Freeport and Brazoria (Wikipedia). A few local details worth knowing when you plan photos:
Peach Point and family roots
Austin’s sister, Emily Austin Perry, settled at Peach Point Plantation here, and the town holds markers for Gulf Prairie, Peach Point and the Battle of Jones Creek (Wikipedia). Old family prints fade. Scan the grandparents’ photos and take one of the baby next to them.
The gator on the school sign
Stephen F. Austin Elementary, which used to serve the area, took its gator mascot from an 11-foot alligator found on school grounds after flooding in 1989. Kids now go to Freeport Elementary, Lanier Middle, Freeport Intermediate and Brazosport High (Wikipedia). Keep a yearly first-day photo, taken at home before you go.
Bryan Beach down the road
Freeport’s Bryan Beach runs about 3.5 miles southwest to the mouth of the Brazos River (Wikipedia). For your own beach photos, go late in the day and face the kids into the wind so their hair stays out of their eyes.

Before you book
Do-it-yourself photo tips for the newborn weeks
- Before your due date, pick one window in the house without direct sun and clear the corner next to it. That’s your photo spot.
- In a town with Austin-era roots, old photos matter. Lay the baby next to a print of a great-grandparent and take a picture of the two together.
- At Bryan Beach, go in the last hour of daylight and keep the sun behind the kids.
- On the first day at Freeport Elementary, take the photo at your front door each year in the same spot.
- Get in the frame. Once a day, hand over the phone and hold your baby for a photo.
