Galveston Island Newborn, Maternity and Family Photos

Galveston has a 10-mile seawall, built after the 1900 storm, and old Victorian streets full of porches and tall windows. I’m Jen Duke. If your family is growing here, I photograph maternity, Fresh 48, newborn and family sessions, so you have more than phone snapshots of these years and you’re actually in some of the pictures.

Newborn sessions take place in my natural-light home studio in Richwood. Fresh 48 can be at the hospital or at home, and family sessions can be at your home or outdoors. Every session includes a digital gallery for downloads and print orders.

Local to Galveston

Island traditions that make good photo reminders

About 53,695 people lived in Galveston at the 2020 census. The city has six historic districts with more than 60 structures on the National Register of Historic Places (Wikipedia). Here is how life on the island can shape the photos you plan.

Dickens on The Strand in December

Dickens on The Strand, Galveston Historical Foundation’s Victorian holiday festival, is held the first weekend in December, with parades, four stages and Tiny Tim’s Play Land for kids (Galveston Historical Foundation). If you want family photos ready for holiday cards, start asking about dates in late summer.

Oleander season

Galveston has been called the “Oleander City” since the early 1900s and is said to have more than 100 oleander varieties (Wikipedia). When they bloom, a bush of flowers makes an easy, colorful background for your own phone photos. Just keep little hands from picking them.

Born on the island

The University of Texas Medical Branch campus in Galveston covers 84 acres and includes seven hospitals (Wikipedia). Fresh 48 photos happen in those first two days, in the hospital or once you’re home. Put your hospital and due date in your inquiry so I can tell you what works.

Before you book

Simple phone photo habits for Galveston families

  1. Older island homes often have tall windows. Put the baby near one that isn’t in direct sun, and turn off the ceiling lights.
  2. If you have a porch, use it. The roof gives open shade, so faces stay soft and nobody squints.
  3. On the seawall or the beach, go in the last hour before sunset and keep the sun behind you, not in everyone’s eyes.
  4. Gulf wind moves fast. Take a burst of photos (hold the shutter button) and pick the one where hair isn’t in anyone’s face.
  5. Hand the phone off once a day so there are photos of you holding the baby, not just the baby.

Where I work

Galveston families and the Richwood studio

My natural-light studio is in my home in Richwood, in Brazoria County, and works by appointment. Newborn sessions are there. For Fresh 48 or a family session, tell me your Galveston neighborhood and I’ll let you know what works.

If you live in an older house, the city’s historic districts include the East End, with 463 buildings, and the Silk Stocking district between Broadway and Seawall Boulevard (Wikipedia). A family session at home can show the place your kids grew up.

Nearby towns: Jamaica Beach, Tiki Island, Bolivar Peninsula. See every town I serve.

Questions

Galveston parents' most common questions

How do I get pricing?

Pricing is by inquiry. Send the session you’re interested in plus your due date or family size, and I’ll reply with details.

Newborn sessions are in my Richwood home studio. Fresh 48 is at the hospital or your home, family sessions are at your home or an outdoor location, and maternity is outdoors within 15 miles of the studio.

Family sessions can happen at your home. Tell me where you live in Galveston in your inquiry and I’ll let you know what works.

Fresh 48 sessions happen in the first two days, at the hospital or at home. Put your hospital and due date in your inquiry and I’ll tell you what I can do.

Get in touch in your second trimester. Newborn spots are limited and usually booked months ahead.

Lots of parents feel that way. I have photographed families for more than 15 years and aim for a relaxed, unhurried session. One client said I was “very patient” and “did not rush the session at all.”
