Iowa Colony Photographer for New Neighbors and New Babies

Iowa Colony was founded in 1908 by a land company from Des Moines, and for decades it was rice farms and only a few dozen people. By 2020 it was home to more than 8,000 people. I’m Jen Duke, and I photograph maternity, Fresh 48, newborn and family sessions for Iowa Colony parents who want photos they’ll print and keep, including photos with mom in them.

Newborn sessions are photographed in my natural-light home studio in Richwood. Fresh 48 happens in the hospital or at home, and family sessions can be at home or outdoors. You’ll get a digital gallery to download, share and order prints from.

Local to Iowa Colony

Iowa Colony went from farm town to family town

Iowa Colony had 1,170 people in 2010 and 8,154 in 2020. It stayed at around 27 residents until the mid-1960s, and rice farming began here in 1920 (Wikipedia). The city sits along State Highway 288 in northern Brazoria County. Here is how that shapes your photo plans.

A town that grew almost sevenfold

Going from 1,170 to 8,154 people in ten years means a lot of new households, and in 2020 Iowa Colony passed 5,000 residents and adopted a home rule charter (Wikipedia). When that many families move in, newborn dates go quickly. Ask about yours in your second trimester.

Pioneer green, black and silver

Iowa Colony High School opened in 2022. Its students are the Pioneers, and the school colors are black, hunter green and silver (Wikipedia). If your family cheers at Freedom Field, a simple hunter green outfit for the baby makes a sweet first game-day photo, and solid colors always photograph better than busy prints.

Fifty miles of trails for stroller walks

Meridiana has more than 100 acres of parks and over 50 miles of paved trails (Meridiana). Paved paths make easy walks with a newborn, and an evening loop is a good time to snap a few photos of your own in the soft light.

Before you book

Quick photo tips for Iowa Colony parents

  1. On a Meridiana trail, walk with the sun low behind you and turn your baby’s stroller so the light hits their face from the side.
  2. Pick one solid color for everyone, like hunter green or black for Pioneer fans. Matching solids look calm in photos, and logos don’t fight for attention.
  3. Find the biggest window in your house. Set your newborn on the bed near it, turn off the ceiling lights and shoot from the side.
  4. Take one photo a month of your baby in the same spot, like the same chair or blanket. You’ll see how fast they grow.
  5. Get in the picture. Hand your phone to your partner so you have photos of you, not just the baby.
