Lake Jackson Newborn, Maternity and Family Photography

Lake Jackson started in the 1940s as a planned town for Dow workers, and Alden B. Dow drew its curving streets around the trees (Wikipedia). I’m Jen Duke, and I photograph maternity, Fresh 48, newborn and family sessions for Lake Jackson parents who want real photos of these years, with mom in them too.

Newborn sessions are in my natural-light home studio in Richwood, by appointment. Fresh 48 happens in the hospital or at home, and family photos can be at your house or outdoors. You get a digital gallery to download, share and order prints from.

Local to Lake Jackson

Planning photos in Alden Dow's tree-lined town

Lake Jackson had 28,177 people at the 2020 census, up from 26,849 in 2010, and its schools are part of Brazosport ISD (Wikipedia). A few things about life here change how you might plan your photos.

Shade on almost every street

Lake Jackson is on the Tree City USA list, and Dow laid out the streets to save as many trees as possible (Wikipedia). That means good shade is often close to home. For your own outdoor photos, use it in the hour before sunset so nobody squints.

Festival of Lights and holiday cards

The Festival of Lights starts the week before Thanksgiving, with a Parade of Lights through downtown after dark. Light Up Lake Jackson keeps going through New Year’s Eve, with holiday selfie stations around town (City of Lake Jackson). If you want family photos back for holiday cards, ask about dates in late summer, since my sessions often book months ahead.

When your baby is born out of town

St. Luke’s Health-Brazosport Hospital in Lake Jackson closed its birthing unit in February 2023, and The Facts reported most local moms already delivered in Galveston or Houston (The Facts). Fresh 48 photos can happen in the hospital room or once you’re home. Put your hospital and due date in your inquiry and I’ll tell you what works.

Before you book

Easy phone photo tips for Lake Jackson parents

  1. Put the baby near a window with no direct sun and turn off the ceiling lights. That soft side light is most of the trick.
  2. For outdoor shots, walk to the nearest big tree on your street in the hour before sunset. Stand everyone in the open shade at its edge, facing the open sky.
  3. At the Parade of Lights or a holiday selfie station, turn off the flash and stand the kids close to the lights so their faces glow. Brace your phone on something to keep it steady.
  4. Get in the picture. Hand your phone to your partner once a day and take one of you holding the baby.
  5. If your baby is born in Galveston or Houston, take a photo of the car seat on the drive home. It’s a small detail you’ll be glad you kept.
